The Journey Continues...
Review written by: Alain B. Burrese From Missoula, MT
"Sacred Journey Of The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman is the sequel to the popular "Way of the Peaceful Warrior." At the beginning of this book, Millman mentions that near the end of his first book, he was sent away for eight years to assimilate his teacher Socrates', teachings and prepare for the final confrontation described at the end of the first book. It was a journey around the world to find himself and to reawaken the vision, purpose, and faith he found with Socrates. He goes on to say that he only wrote a little about those years in the first book, and that this book relates the first steps on that journey.

It's also important to remember that this book is written as a novel. Millman did travel around the world, have unusual experiences, and meet remarkable people, but the narrative in this book is a blend of fact and imagination. He wove threads from the fabric of his life into a quilt that stretches across different levels of reality. Nonetheless, it is a widely enjoyable tale that not only keeps one's interest, but teaches lessons along the way. As Millman learns and grows, so does the reader.

The story starts with a troubled Millman taking off to visit India. Not finding what he was looking for there, he stops in Hawaii on the way home. It is on the islands that he finds a woman Socrates had told him about. The woman goes by the name Mama Chia, and through Millman's encounters and interactions with her and others on the Hawaiian island, he learns a variety of lessons regarding life. Some of these lessons revolve around ancient teachings of what the Indians called Chakras, or energy centers. The lessons also deal with concepts of fear and pain, and finding peace within oneself.

I have been a fan of Dan Millman's since reading his first book in the 80s. I devoured this book as soon as it was published, and I've read it numerous times, just as I've read the first one. They are quick reads, entertaining, and each time they help me look at something in my own life a little differently. I agree with Roger Walsh that Millman's books are true teaching stories, and that they are entertaining, entrancing, wise, and awakening.

You really should read the first book, "Way of the Peaceful Warrior," before reading this one. But if you have read the first one, and enjoyed it, I'm sure you'll like this one too. Personally, I think I enjoyed the first a little bit better, but I liked this one too. I highly recommend them both, as well as other Millman titles.

Challenging
Review written by: Dr. Gunta M. Caldwell From Melbourne, Australia
I find Dan Millman's books easy to read, but with some very powerful messages. He shows through Socrates "adventures" how spiritual growth can occur. He illustrates how growth is slow, challenging and frought with many obstacles. One needs to be dedicated, committed and willing to experience whatever it takes to achieve that growth. But this journey is portrayed in an uplifting way. I would recommend all of Millman's books for anyone who would like to embark on a spiritual journey of their own.

Chicken soup for the spirit
Review written by: Atte Joutsen From USA
Dan Millman writes about his personal growth that he did in Hawaii guided by a kahuna named Mama Chia. Millman conveys the spiritual lessons in an easy way while maintaining the story flow. I highly recommend this book after you have read his earlier work Way of the Peaceful Warrior.
