It is only by grounding our awareness in the living sensation of our bodies that the "I Am," our real presence, can awaken.

I think this wise advice pops up again and again in spiritual literature and certainly my own experience confirms it to be true.

The quote here attributed to Gurdjieff comes not from him but from my essay on self-observation, in which I recounted some of my own experiences and said "Through our own ongoing experimentation, we began to get glimpses of what Gurdjieff meant when he said that it is only by grounding our awareness in the living sensation of our bodies that the 'I Am,' our real presence, can awaken."

This was my own formulation, my summary, of the essence of how I understood (and still understand) one small but important aspect of what Gurdjieff was saying through his books, meetings, and the teachings as they were passed down through his close students in various group meetings in which I took part.

Unfortunately, some people have been using that sentence as though it came from Gurdjieff himself. It did not. (If it had I would have put the sentence in quotation marks.) I feel it is important to clarify this so that in so far as possible people do not continue to quote this sentence as something that Gurdjieff actually said or wrote.

People can read the entire essay at: http://www.dennislewis.org/articles-other-writings/articles-essays/gurdjieff-the-further-reaches-of-self-observation/.
